KO:YAD- The man, his boat and two rivers!

Manju Bora is known for her highly passionate movies and over the years, she has given people some intense stories, which have left us only wanting for more. So, the frames I saw in KO:YAD the evening of 22nd December, 2013, made me wonder if I would be watching anything more romantic; love, pain, hate, sadness, all emotions seamlessly woven together in a film directed by Manju Bora, wishing she creates something new sooner than later.

Synopsis

Paukam lives by the river Disang in a small house. His only belongings are the two rivers Disang and Brahmaputra and the boat given to him by his father. Paukam's father left his mother for another woman when he was just a child. His mother then left for her parents’ home taking Paukam with her. Paukam's grandfather built a small house for them in their backyard. His mother worked odd jobs in the neighbourhood to earn their livelihood. But because she was a single mother, a few men tried to exploit her physically. One day, a person called Mitum Gam, who is her father’s age, rapes her which leads to her committing suicide.

After his mother’s suicide, Paukam is taken to his father’s home where his stepmother refuses to accept him. As he comes of age, his father gives him his boat and Paukam sets out to live independently by the river Disang.

There he marries Taksiri and has three children. He earns his livelihood by collecting firewood from the two rivers. Through his meagre earnings Paukam manages to educate his first son Migam, giving him the opportunities that he never had as a child. Migam goes on to pursue medicine, but betrays his family by leaving them alone and destitute. Paukam’s other children, deprived of the opportunities presented to his eldest, also leave him soon after.

Finally, the boat, the only constant in his life, he thought would never betray him, sinks in a whirlpool leaving him and his wife with nothing.
